Bicyclists need ways to get across rivers.
There's a great trail along the Danube River in Germany and Austria. It mostly runs on both sides, but occasionally it's on one side only. Bicycle ferries are provided to deal with these gaps. These are exclusively for bikes and pedestrians, and they're designed for it to be easy to roll the bikes on and off.
