  Back to trip overview

Candlestick to Labyrinth has another big climb, over Hardscrabble. We think (but we aren't completely sure) that it isn't quite as bad as Murphy. We marvel at how the climbs are woven into the terrain. At the top of Hardscrabble we hiked out toward the ruins, but when we discovered that reaching them required hiking down to river level (and up again, and back) we elected to view them from afar.

After Hardscrabble, we reached river level at Potato Bottom. We also said farewell to the White Rim formation. This formation slopes downward as it goes west, and it disappears under the Green River in this area. In addition, we learn to ride in sand on Thursday. "Sand" isn't the stuff in your sandbox; it's about as fine as table salt, and it's often a foot deep. New skills!

Hardscrabble, at the top ...

... a good place for lunch

Potato Bottom -- one lonely tree, the first one we've seen in days. An invasive Tamarisk, of course, but even so, it's a tree.

We bid farewell to the White Rim, which now dips under the Green River
