  Back to trip overview

This was the long day -- not just the longest distance, but the awful climb over Murphy's Hogback. The prospect of Murphy's climb tempered our enthusiasm for other exploration.

The trail follows the contour of the bench formed by the White Rim sandstone. Each drainage from the top has gnawed away at the White Rim, producing a convoluted contour. The trail therefore winds in and out, going around the ends of ridges (with two notable exceptions) and following the drainage back into the canyon.

We rise early, so we have as much time for today's ride as possible. Those would be the La Sal mountains on the horizon

The hard core rode out looking for White Crack. The rest of us rode on a bit and looked back at it

Murphy Basin, harbinger of Murphy's Hogback. Once erosion cuts through the White Rim, it's easy going from there

Murphy's Hogback -- walking down the hill we just rode -- well, pushed -- up

Starting down the west side of Murphy's Hogback -- perhaps not as rough as the front side, but nearly as steel and deep in loose gravel and sand

Lower end of Murphy descent

That's Candlestick Tower, so you'd think the camp must be nearby. Not so -- we still have miles to go, around Soda Springs basin

In case your browser can't handle the Java applet for panoramas, here's the 2D version of Murphy Basin
